Computer Backup Recovery Strategies

Practical Advice and Information to protect your data in the event of disaster for the home user!

Storing Computer Backup Media

So you have followed some of the advice discussed and now you have copies of your critical data backed up.  Well, your not done yet.  If your backups are sitting next to your computer you need to move them.  No, not to another room, but to another building.  Ideally, a safe deposit box.  Backing up your data is just the first step to protecting the information you have. Here are some practical tips for protecting your data.

  • Keep backup media (CD’s DVD’s, floppies, tapes, etc) out of direct sunlight
  • Keep backup media (CD’s DVD’s, floppies, tapes, etc) out of reach of children
  • Keep backup media (CD’s DVD’s, floppies, tapes, etc) away from other electronic devices
  • Develop a rotation system to periodically move your backup media to an off-site location such as a safe deposit box or another location.  Another location would NOT be your friends house next door but rather a location several miles away and not susceptible to the same natural disaster (flood, tornado, fire, hurricanes, etc)
